Confession time: my August goal to write a complete first draft of my middle grade novel fell apart within a few days.
I muscled through about 5,000 words, but I eventually had to admit that I couldn’t realistically finish the whole thing this month. To be honest, I forgot how long drafting takes me. (It’s been a minute.) I just don’t have the hours to write 2k words a day in this season. That’s ok, but it did mean a pivot was necessary. (P.S. That project hasn’t been shelved; it just won’t be finished this month. My children will mutiny if I don’t finish it. They’re alpha reading for me and are super invested.)
I still really wanted to finish a project in August for MamaWriMo before my writing time shrinks even more with grad school beginning. So, I turned my eyes to another project I’ve had percolating since last fall: a collection of poetry.
I’m delighted to announce that the hardback edition of Some Days Are Sandstone will be available for preorder soon, and publication day is set for October 15!
From the jacket: Following the flow of the seasons, Some Days Are Sandstone explores themes of self-discovery, mental health, and motherhood with grit and wit. This debut collection from Abby Harding draws on the natural world to produce insightful, confessional poetry that gently asks,
Who will I be tomorrow
because of the shape of today?
If you like the poetry of Billy Collins, Mary Oliver, and Maggie Smith, I think you'll also enjoy Some Days Are Sandstone. AND, if you don’t want to wait until October, I’m actively seeking readers willing to leave a (genuine and honest) review on or before pub day in exchange for a FREE Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) ebook. If you’d like to sign up, click the button below and fill out the form to get the download link!
One caveat (this for those of you who know me IRL)—there are a few swears and at least two mentions of boobs in there, so proceed with caution. ;)
Oh, and one more thing…
Another announcement, also set for October—I’m co-leading a writing retreat!
Autumn Alchemy: Writing Our Renewal is a transformative writing retreat designed for women who are ready to explore the power of storytelling. Whether you're a seasoned writer or just beginning your creative journey, this retreat offers a unique opportunity to delve into themes of grief, mourning, and rebirth in a supportive, nurturing environment.
Join us at Luella's Lodge this autumn to learn how to weave your personal experiences into compelling narratives that resonate with depth and authenticity. Through hands-on workshops and guided exercises led by experienced writers and poets, you'll discover new ways to express your emotions and craft stories that not only heal but also inspire.
This is your chance to connect with like-minded women, embrace the changing season, and renew your creative spirit. Come prepared to write, reflect, and transform.
Excited as I am about these projects? Consider sharing this newsletter with a friend who might enjoy reading an ARC or joining me at the retreat in October!
A day in the life…
On my nightstand: We’re All Lying by Marie Still
I borrowed this thriller (written by a writing acquaintance!) from the library, and it’s going to be my last “for fun” read until I figure out this grad school thing.
On my headphones: They Say / I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing by Gerald Graff & Cathy Birkenstein
A listen as riveting as it sounds, tbh, but a recommended resource by the professor teaching the course I’m taking this fall.
On my desk: Some Days Are Sandstone drafts, my unfinished middle grade novel, and a pile of required reading for school.
